Guatemala: Innovation, talent and the digital economy

Skills, connectivity and innovation drive Guatemala’s competitiveness push

Central America’s most populous nation is taking a decisive, investment-led approach to strengthening national talent and accelerating digital innovation. In December 2025, Guatemala signed a new cooperation framework with the United Nations, mobilizing $1 billion between 2026 and 2030 to close structural development gaps and reinforce long-term competitiveness.

One of the current most exciting developments is the rapid expansion of Guatemala’s tech sector. The US$300 million investment in a data center in Guatemala City, one of the largest in Central America, marks a key step toward establishing the country as a regional technology hub. Backed by a stable economy and reliable energy, Guatemala is well-positioned to attract further investments in AI and data-driven innovation.

A core priority is upgrading education and skills to lift productivity across Guatemala’s deep labor pool, which includes 11.8 million people of working age. In parallel, the country is fast-tracking the digitization of its economy under the Digital Government Plan 2021-2026, focused on streamlining public services and strengthening cybersecurity. With internet penetration reaching 62% by the end of 2025, Guatemala is now seeing rapid growth in e-commerce and fintech adoption, with clear opportunities opening for IT services, digital platforms and outsourcing investment.
